There are two ways for writers to judge the quality of their book: first, they should wait at least six months to re-read it; by then, they can view it with a fresh set of eyes, and better identify what works and doesn’t work. Second, they should solicit the opinions of readers who have no emotional ties to the book, either through book reviews, forums, or online comments.
